Color and Black & White Photographs April 8, 2010

I picked this pattern because I love the colors in it.  The mix between the bright colors and the black make for interesting contrast.  In the black & white photo there are atleast eight values.

I choose this pattern because it is one of my favorite dresses.  The black & white photo has seven values.

I choose this pattern because the flowers have some shading to them rather than just being a flat color.  I felt that this would create more values when the picture was converted to black & white.  The photo in black & white has approximately 15 values.

Questions 1 & 2 April 1, 2010

Question 1: As a student beginning a ten-week period of color theory study, what do you hope to learn from the class? What are your initial hopes and expectations?

In Color Theory I hope to gain an understanding of the functions and elements of color.  Being a retail merchandising major, I also hope to gain a better understanding of color combinations in order to aesthetically please consumers.  Lastly, I hope to improve on my artistic skills and be able to develop my ideas on to paper.

Question 2: Given your placement as a student, who is about to begin a quarter of studying color, how do you read this image? What do you think is going on in the colorwheel, and what do you think Andy Warhol is doing in his illustration of Goethe in hyper color in different combinations?

As a student just beginning my studies in color theory I read the images as a unique way to interpret the colorwheel.  The pictures of Goethe slowly transition through the color wheel as the eye continues to read the image clockwise. The first picture plays off of the warmer colors such as red and orange and continues to move through the color wheel until reaching the last picture that plays off of cooler colors such as violet and blue.
